What happens if you have low blood sugar? How to treat low blood sugar

Blood sugar level is an important indicator of a person's health. Some people often experience symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, and hand tremors, which are manifestations of low blood sugar. Low blood sugar is a common phenomenon, mostly caused by unhealthy and unscientific eating habits and certain diseases. What harm does low blood sugar do to the human body? Are there any treatments?

1. Symptoms of low blood sugar

1: Low blood sugar is also a disease, called hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia refers to a disease that occurs when the concentration of glucose in the blood is lower than normal. Patients often experience hunger, palpitations, hand tremors, dizziness, sweating, irritability, anxiety, and general weakness. In severe cases, brain dysfunction may occur, such as trance, drowsiness, slow reaction, and even coma.

2: Hypoglycemia is related to the eating habit of eating sweets on an empty stomach. Eating sweets on an empty stomach will cause a sudden increase in blood sugar concentration in the body, excessive release of insulin, a rapid drop in blood sugar, and even hypoglycemia, which forces the body to release the second hormone adrenaline in order to restore blood sugar to normal.

3: The effects of these two hormones can cause dizziness, headache, sweating, and weakness. This is reactive hypoglycemia. People with milder symptoms can take glucose water or white sugar water to replenish the glucose necessary for life.

4: Fasting or dieting can also lead to hypoglycemia. Usually, dizziness, memory loss, stroke and panic may occur after fasting for 8 hours. Women who love beauty often suffer from hypoglycemia due to dieting.

2. Treatment of low blood sugar

1: General treatment: Determine whether the patient's airway is unobstructed and take appropriate measures if necessary; prevent tongue injury during an epileptic seizure.

2: Emergency treatment: If the patient still has swallowing movements, some sugar water can be fed, and most of the symptoms can be quickly improved. Those who have already fainted should be injected with glucose intravenously immediately, and 50ml of 50% glucose should be injected intravenously at a rate of 10ml per minute. For most patients, 20-60ml of 50% glucose is sufficient to correct hypoglycemia. When a large amount of sugar is injected quickly, symptomatic hypokalemia can occur. Most hypoglycemic patients can wake up within 5-10 minutes after sugar injection. If hypoglycemia is severe and lasts for a long time, neurological function cannot be fully restored for a long time.

3: After the patient wakes up, drink juice and food as soon as possible. When patients use intermediate-acting insulin (low-sperm protamine zinc insulin) or chlorpropamide, they may have hypoglycemia. For these patients, they need to be observed for 12 to 48 hours after waking up to prevent hypoglycemia from recurring. Sometimes, it is necessary to add high-protein meals such as milk and intravenous 5% glucose when eating carbohydrates. If it is only mild hypoglycemia, the patient is conscious and can eat a few candies, a few biscuits, or drink half a cup of sugar water, which can quickly correct hypoglycemia. Generally, the symptoms of hypoglycemia will disappear after ten minutes.

3: For patients with hypoglycemia

In addition to timely treatment, you should also pay attention to a reasonable diet. Hypoglycemia can cause abnormal reactions and diseases in patients at any time, so patients should supplement some sugar in their daily lives. They can take it in their daily diet and eat more high-sugar foods.
