What is the reason for low blood sugar after a meal?

Generally speaking, after a meal, people consume a certain amount of carbohydrates, so the glucose level in their blood will be slightly higher than when they are fasting. But for some people, their blood sugar level drops instead of rising after a meal. Why is this?

1. Reasons for low blood sugar after meals

1: Excessive insulin secretion and delayed peak. Under normal circumstances, blood sugar levels rise after a meal, reaching a peak in about 30 to 60 minutes and then dropping. Plasma insulin levels also rise to a peak in 30 to 60 minutes, 5 to 10 times the baseline value, then drop and return to the baseline level in 3 to 4 hours. Therefore, although normal people's blood sugar levels rise after a meal, they fluctuate within a certain range. Type 2 diabetes patients may have excessive insulin secretion (hyperinsulinemia) and delayed peak. Insulin is maintained at a high concentration and cannot return to the baseline level, so low blood sugar or even hypoglycemia occurs after a meal.

2: Insufficient diet and excessive post-meal exercise Diet and exercise are two important basic measures for diabetes treatment. Strict diet control and appropriate exercise are conducive to weight loss, improvement of hyperglycemia and reduction of hypoglycemic drugs. However, the diet plan should be strictly and long-term, and exercise should be regular. If the diet is insufficient or the post-meal exercise intensity is too high, the patient may also have low post-meal blood sugar or even hypoglycemia.

3: Excessive dosage of hypoglycemic drugs, incompatibility with diet, or simultaneous use of other drugs that enhance the hypoglycemic effect of hypoglycemic drugs may also lead to a significant decrease in postprandial blood sugar.

4: Common sense about postprandial hypoglycemia: For those with simple reactive hypoglycemia, dietary conditioning and treatment for autonomic nervous system dysfunction are the main treatments. When the disease occurs, it is not advisable to take sugary foods. Although it can quickly relieve the symptoms of hypoglycemia, it can also further stimulate the pancreas to secrete insulin, thereby aggravating the condition. You can eat some biscuits, steamed bread slices and other foods immediately. It is advisable to eat less carbohydrates on a regular basis, and it is best to drink sugar-free drinks for breakfast. If accompanied by emotional anxiety, irritability, poor sleep, etc., some medications are also needed, such as oryzanol, brain-boosting compound, vitamins, etc.

2: Dietary adjustment for low blood sugar

1: The diet should be balanced, containing at least 50-60% carbohydrates (the same dietary principle as diabetics), including vegetables, brown rice, avocado, konjac, seeds, nuts, grains, lean meat, fish, yogurt, and raw cheese.

2: A high-fiber diet helps stabilize blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels drop, combine fiber with protein foods (e.g., wheat crackers with raw cheese or almond jam). Eat fresh apples instead of apple jam. The fiber in apples can suppress blood sugar fluctuations. You can also add a glass of juice to quickly raise blood sugar levels.

3. Symptoms of postprandial hypoglycemia

To be responsible for your own health, you must consult a doctor in time and adjust your physical condition in time. It is not enough to rely solely on medication. At the same time, diet adjustment is also more important. Moreover, long-term medication is not good for the mind. Dietary supplements are the best and healthiest treatment method.
