Varicose veins are a common disease in men. The incidence rate in the normal general population is about 15%, while the incidence rate in the infertile population is about 35%. Animal experiments and clinical studies have shown that varicocele can cause progressive testicular dysfunction. 75% to 85% of patients with varicocele will develop secondary infertility. Varicose vein ligation is currently the most common surgery for treating male infertility.

Common complications after varicocelectomy include postoperative edema, testicular artery injury, and recurrence of varicocele.

1. Edema Edema is the most common complication after varicocelectomy, with an incidence of 3% to 33% and an average of 7%. Lymphatic vessel damage or ligation is the main cause of edema.

2. Testicular artery damage. Testicular atrophy or lack of sperm after surgery is mostly caused by ligation or damage to the testicular artery during surgery. Animal experiments and human studies have shown that testicular artery ligation can cause testicular damage to a great extent, especially in infertile patients.

3. Recurrence of varicocele The recurrence rate after varicocelectomy is 0.6% to 45%. It is most common in adolescent patients. Due to technical or anatomical factors, missed ligation or failure to simultaneously treat the external veins of the internal varicocele system often causes recurrence. The recurrence rate is lower when all veins are treated with microdissection techniques under the external ring.
