Why do men grow beards?

Why do men grow beards?

It has to be admitted that beards have become an important symbol of male masculinity. Men are often the first to think of beards. After entering puberty, small hairs will gradually appear on the chin of men. As time goes by, these small hairs will gradually become thicker and harder. Although most men have beards around their chins, what causes men to grow beards?

Beards are secondary sexual characteristics of human beings, which are caused by the testicles, the sex glands in men. Testicles have two very important functions: one is to produce sperm, which is used to give birth to offspring; the other is to produce testosterone. Testosterone is a male hormone that can promote hair growth. Modern medicine believes that the hair follicles on men's upper lips and cheeks contain a receptor for androgen, which is very sensitive to the effects of androgen, which is the main reason for the growth of beards. However, in women's bodies, this androgen is very rare and the absolute advantage is estrogen, which does not promote hair growth.

If there is an abnormal phenomenon between men and women: men do not grow beards, but women do, then it is very likely that there is a problem with the level of androgen.

This is the result of the dominance of androgens in the male body. Many of the differences in physical appearance and even personality between men and women are affected by sex hormones. The difference is that androgens are dominant in men, while estrogen is dominant in women.

The growth of our hair, including beards, is largely regulated by these two sex hormones. The effects of these two hormones on hair in different parts of our body are different. Estrogen promotes hair growth and inhibits beard and chest hair growth, while androgens have the opposite effect, which is why women have a lot of hair but no chest hair, and men have big beards...

In addition, since each person has different levels of sex hormones in their body, each person's sensitivity to sex hormones in hair growth also varies. Therefore, it is common for men to have thicker hair than women, or for women to have slight moustaches under their noses.
