Corpus cavernosum edema

Corpus cavernosum edema

The condition of corpus cavernosum edema is caused by infection of the penis. Because the glans penis becomes very sensitive when stimulated by the outside world, the erection of the penis may fail, and bloating and pain may occur when urinating. We need to check whether the cause of corpus cavernosum edema is inflammation or infection, and then treat it in time to avoid affecting the male fertility.

1. What is the cavernous body?

The penis is mainly composed of three parallel corpora cavernosa, which are similar in structure. There are two corpora cavernosa, which are shaped like cones with sharp ends. The two corpora cavernosa are arranged in parallel on both sides of the midline of the human body and are closely connected. Functionally, they are completely a unit. They form the basis of the penis shaft, located on the back and sides of the penis, and occupy most of the volume of the penis. Except for the inner side of each corpus cavernosum that is attached to each other and is flat, their cross-sectional shape is approximately circular. The two corpora cavernosa separate from each other only at the root to form two crura of the corpus cavernosum. After separation, they first swell slightly and then gradually become thinner, and are attached to the pubis, the periosteum of the inferior sciatic ramus and the perineal fascia on each side through a strong fibrous band.

2. The special significance of the corpus cavernosum of the penis

The glans penis has a special significance in terms of sexual sensation. The glans penis is richly innervated and very sensitive to external stimuli. In humans, the transverse striated muscles covering the corpus cavernosum, namely the bulbospongiosus and ischiospongiosus, are not related to erection, but they both contract rhythmically during ejaculation to help ejaculate semen out of the body. The transverse striated muscles of the pelvis of many mammals play an important role in the full erection of the penis.

3. Mechanism of the corpus cavernosum of the penis

The third cylinder of the penis is the unpaired corpus cavernosum (Corpus spongiosum), which is located in the urethral groove on the midline of the ventral surface of the penis, just below the two corpora cavernosa, and is named because the urethra passes through it. It is much smaller than the corpora cavernosa, and its location is the urethral surface of the penis.
