Prostatic hyperplasia residual urine volume

Prostatic hyperplasia residual urine volume

The measurement of residual urine is one of the key ways to diagnose prostatic hyperplasia. Because prostatic hyperplasia causes patients to have difficulty urinating, accompanied by aggravated obstruction, the urine in the bladder cannot be completely discharged every time they urinate, and the urine remaining in the bladder is called "residual urine". The appearance and amount of residual urine reflect the obstruction of the bladder's urination function. In the whole process of diagnosing and treating prostatic hyperplasia, the measurement of residual urine is an indispensable process. There are three measurement methods: transabdominal B-ultrasound measurement method, catheterization method and intravenous urethrography.

Transabdominal B-ultrasound measurement is the most common method for patients without any discomfort. It does not cause urinary tract infection and is the best choice for those who need to repeatedly measure residual urine volume during treatment, but this method is not accurate enough.

Catheterization is a method of inserting a catheter into the patient after urinating to drain the urine and measure the residual urine volume. This method is accurate and reliable, but it causes discomfort to the patient and is not easily accepted by the patient.

Intravenous urethrography is a method in which an expert takes a line film during the bladder filling phase and after urination to observe the residual urine volume. This method cannot be used for quantitative analysis and has little practical significance.

Diuresis condition

When the residual urine volume reaches 60ml, it indicates that the bladder detrusor muscle is in a state of failure, which is a condition for surgical treatment. Even if the residual urine volume is below 60ml, it is necessary to choose appropriate treatment methods and actively treat it.

When the symptoms of patients with prostatic hyperplasia improve after treatment and there are no urethral symptoms, residual urine measurement is performed again. If there is relief compared to before, it indicates that the obstruction is reversible and non-surgical treatment methods can be selected.

Patients with prostatic hyperplasia have urethral obstruction, so there will be residual urine in the bladder, which should be 0Ml under normal circumstances. However, as the volume of the male prostate further expands and the obstruction worsens, the residual urine in the bladder may gradually increase. When suffering from prostatic hyperplasia, if the residual urine in the bladder is less than 50Ml, it is considered normal, and if it exceeds 50Ml, it is considered abnormal and requires further surgical treatment. Otherwise, the degree of prostatic hyperplasia will further worsen, and the residual urine volume will gradually increase. In the long run, it is easy to cause repeated urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and even changes such as hydronephrosis and ureteral dilation, which will seriously affect the patient's health. Therefore, if the residual urine volume in the bladder exceeds 50mL, patients with prostatic hyperplasia need surgical treatment. If it does not reach 50mL, they can be given medication again and have regular follow-up for residual urine volume.
