Pain in the left lower abdomen when running may be related to four factors

When running, some people may suddenly experience pain in the left lower abdomen. Generally speaking, abdominal pain while running is mostly related to the following four factors.

Gastrointestinal spasm

Running on an empty stomach or after a meal, eating too much or drinking too much (especially too much cold drink) before exercise can cause gastrointestinal dysfunction, cramps and abdominal pain;

Eating too soon before exercise

Eating too much or eating foods that are difficult to digest, such as beans, potatoes, milk, and pasta, can cause excessive gas production, leading to abdominal distension. In addition, strenuous exercise can increase abdominal pressure and cause the peritoneum to be stretched, leading to abdominal pain. At this time, coldness in the abdomen, stool accumulation, and irritation from roundworms can all cause intestinal spasms and abdominal pain.

Chronic abdominal diseases

Patients with chronic hepatitis, cholecystitis, gastric ulcer disease or chronic appendicitis may also experience pain when participating in strenuous exercise due to the stimulation of pulling, vibration and other stimulation of the lesion site. The pain is generally at the lesion site.

Running or vigorous exercise after meals

As you exercise, you swallow a lot of air, which makes the stomach expand further. This can easily lead to gastroesophageal reflux, resulting in belching, burping, heartburn or nausea, and thus upper abdominal distension and pain.
