Why do you need to hold your urine when doing an ultrasound? How long should you hold your urine?

B-ultrasound is a very common examination method, and the examination results are highly accurate. But for people who are about to undergo a B-ultrasound examination, there is a big problem, and that problem is holding urine. Many people don't understand why they have to hold urine for a simple B-ultrasound examination?

1. Why do you need to hold your urine?

The uterus and ovaries are located deep inside the pelvic cavity, and the small intestine often droops into the pelvic cavity. During an abdominal B-ultrasound, the peristalsis of the intestines and their contents will interfere with the images of the uterus and ovaries, causing them to be unclear. Therefore, you need to drink a lot of water before the examination to fill your bladder and push the intestines upward. If you do an ultrasound examination without a full bladder, the gas in the bladder and the gas in the uterus will overlap, causing misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. However, not all gynecological transabdominal B-ultrasounds require holding urine. In the following situations, it is completely unnecessary: After 8 weeks of pregnancy, the uterus grows and rises into the abdominal cavity, naturally pushing the intestines upward, and there is amniotic fluid in the uterine cavity. At this time, it is no longer necessary to hold urine to observe the fetus.

2. What is the best degree of holding back?

You need to drink 6 to 8 cups of water half an hour to an hour before the examination. Generally speaking, it is best to hold your urine until you feel the urge to urinate. This is not as many people say, because an overfilled bladder will compress the pelvic organs, causing them to shift and deform. Some subtle lesions are often covered up, such as small uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts. The signs of pregnancy (fetal sac, embryo) are also flattened due to pressure and cannot be clearly displayed. Therefore, holding urine too much, like holding urine too little, will cause difficulties and errors in diagnosis.
