Why do men snore?

Snoring is a very common disease. In fact, snoring has no effect on most people. In the eyes of ordinary people, snoring means that a person sleeps very well. However, people don’t know that according to research, snoring will affect physical health. Long-term snoring will also bring harm to the body. Especially now, most people always have the problem of snoring, mostly men. So why do men snore?

Why do more men snore than women? Various surveys and studies have shown that about one-third of men snore chronically, while only one-fifth of women do. The American website "Today I Found the Truth" recently published an article saying that this difference is caused by the different physiological structures between men and women.

First, from the perspective of physiological anatomy, men's larynx is lower than women's, which results in a larger space in their throats. When men fall asleep, once the tongue unconsciously shrinks to this area, it may block part of the airway, leading to snoring resonance; while women's larynx is higher, if the tongue shrinks to this area, it will completely block breathing, so they are often awakened by suffocation before snoring.

Secondly, snoring is also related to pharyngeal mechanics. Studies have found that men are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea syndrome and hypopnea than women, and about 84% of cases are caused by airway obstruction.

Men have greater pharyngeal strength than women, and although our upper airways shrink as we age, they eventually become more folded in men than in women, and men's airway size changes significantly when they lie down compared to when they are standing up.

A spirometry test also showed that during strenuous exercise, the size of the pharynx changed significantly more in men than in women.

It is precisely because of the greater magnitude of the changes that men are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea than women, and men snore more heavily, and this becomes more obvious as they age.

After reading the above article, I believe everyone has correctly understood the harm of snoring to the body. According to studies, people who snore are prone to sleep apnea syndrome, which has an adverse effect on the respiratory system. The volume of snoring is closely related to sleeping posture and different living habits, which can cause physical diseases.
