What causes epididymitis?

Some young men may experience symptoms of testicular and epididymal pain, and this symptom is often more severe when standing or walking. In addition to this symptom, the patient may also suddenly develop a high fever. At this time, the patient must pay attention to timely medical treatment, because you may have epididymitis. But some people often wonder, what causes the disease?

1. Acute non-specific orchitis often occurs in patients with urethritis, cystitis, prostatitis, patients after prostatectomy and patients with long-term indwelling urinary catheters. The infection spreads to the epididymis through the lymph or vas deferens, causing epididymal orchitis. Common pathogens are E. coli, Proteus, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacteria can spread to the testicles through the bloodstream, causing simple orchitis.

2. Chronic orchitis is mostly caused by incomplete treatment of non-specific acute orchitis. It can also be caused by fungal, spirochetal, or parasitic infections, such as testicular syphilis. Patients with previous testicular trauma may develop granulomatous orchitis. Local or whole-body radioactive isotope phosphorus irradiation of the testicles can also cause orchitis and damage the testicular tissue.

3. Mumps is the most common cause of orchitis. About 20% of patients with mumps have orchitis. It is more common in late puberty. The testicles are highly enlarged and purple-blue in color. When the testicles are cut open, the testicular tubules cannot be squeezed out due to the reaction and edema of the interstitial tissue. Histological observations show edema and vascular dilation, a large number of inflammatory cells infiltrate, and varying degrees of degeneration of the seminiferous tubules. When orchitis heals, the testicles become smaller and soft. The seminiferous tubules are severely atrophied, but the testicular interstitial cells are preserved, so the secretion of testosterone is not affected.

When the body's resistance is reduced, some bacteria and viruses will invade the vas deferens and then enter the epididymitis, which will cause epididymitis. To prevent the occurrence of this disease, in addition to exercising to improve the body's resistance, you must also pay attention to parotitis. After the disease, you must seek timely treatment to prevent orchitis or epididymitis.
