The dangers of different vision in both eyes

When you look at things normally, you often find that one of your eyes is much better than the other one, but you are not aware of the problem of different vision. As a result, when you go to the hospital for a check-up, you find that the vision of your two eyes is completely different and the difference is huge. One eye is nearsighted, the other is farsighted, and so on. This situation is not uncommon. The harm of different vision in two eyes is also very great. We need to understand how it happens?

What causes anisometropia?

Huang Xuelin, chief physician of the Ophthalmology Department of Guangdong Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital, introduced the causes of anisometropia during an interview: anisometropia is mainly caused by the unbalanced development of the eye axis. In addition, ocular trauma, scleral perforation, chemical burns, various corneal surgeries, corneal ulcers, etc. can also lead to anisometropia. In fact, in real life, many people have a slight difference in vision between their two eyes, that is, the phenomenon of low-degree anisometropia between the two eyes is common. Generally speaking, slight anisometropia will not cause too much discomfort to people.

What are the consequences of anisometropia?

Dr. Huang pointed out the consequences of anisometropia: if the vision of the two eyes is too different, it will not only make people feel uncomfortable, but also have a certain impact on the development of the eyes, especially children. It will not only cause children's naked eye vision to decline, but also cause binocular monovision impairment and loss of stereoscopic vision. The younger the age, the easier it is to lose binocular monovision function, which is also one of the common causes of amblyopia in children.

In addition, when there is a high degree of refractive disparity between the two eyes, the brain will inhibit the visual development of the eye with poorer vision. Over time, the eye with poorer vision may develop amblyopia or even esotropia or exotropia.

What measures can be taken to relieve and treat anisometropia?

1. Wearing glasses with frames: Wearing glasses has a good effect on relieving anisometropia, but it is generally suitable when the difference in binocular vision does not exceed 200 degrees. Generally, when the difference between binocular vision exceeds 200 degrees, the things that can be seen will appear larger on one side and smaller on the other side, thus affecting the brain's judgment of the image and causing symptoms such as dizziness. At this time, the effect of frame glasses on relieving anisometropia will be much worse.

2. Wearing contact lenses is better: For those who don't like wearing glasses and don't have any allergic symptoms, wearing contact lenses is the best choice, because compared with frame glasses, contact lenses can be attached to the surface of the cornea. After wearing contact lenses, the image size you see is basically the same as normal vision, which will not cause errors in brain judgment and will not put pressure on the eyeballs.

3. Laser surgery can be used for treatment: For people with severe anisometropia that cannot be relieved by wearing glasses, laser eye surgery can help restore vision, especially for younger people, such as children. Through surgery, their vision correction effect will be better than that of adults. The emerging femtosecond laser surgery is more effective and safer for the treatment of anisometropia than traditional surgery.
