Is male epilepsy hereditary?

Is male epilepsy hereditary? If you ask this question, many doctors will tell you that epilepsy is hereditary. However, there is no accurate number for the probability that a child of a male epileptic will have the disease. So if an epileptic patient wants to have a child, he or she can first understand the genetic characteristics of epilepsy to avoid the disease in the child to the greatest extent possible.

Epilepsy is hereditary to a certain extent. Temporal epilepsy is a type of epilepsy. So how is the inheritance of temporal epilepsy? Many patients with temporal epilepsy are afraid to have children because they are not clear about these issues. In fact, temporal epilepsy is mainly an acquired disease. Although there are genetic factors, they are rare.

The International League Against Epilepsy recently named a new epileptic syndrome and familial temporal epilepsy. It is rare to have a family history of temporal epilepsy, and genetic studies have also shown that temporal epilepsy is mainly an acquired disease, and genetic factors play a small role. However, some experts have found that some patients have a family history in their studies of surgically treated temporal epilepsy patients. Follow-up visits have found that 60 to 70 percent of patients can be relieved, which may have a different cause from refractory temporal epilepsy.

Many experts believe that temporal epilepsy is hereditary. Generally speaking, anti-epileptic drugs have a good therapeutic effect on familial temporal epilepsy. Follow-up of patients found that patients may have long-term relief regardless of whether they take medication or not. The hereditary probability of temporal epilepsy is very low. Clinically, epileptic seizures caused by genetics are rare, and they can be well controlled and relieved through standardized anti-epileptic drug treatment. Therefore, patients with temporal epilepsy do not need to worry too much about the genetic problem of epilepsy.

What are the causes of epilepsy?

The causes of epilepsy can be divided into two types: idiopathic and symptomatic.

Idiopathic epilepsy refers to a type of epilepsy that has no manifestations of organic or metabolic brain diseases and whose causes are still unclear. It is also called true or primary epilepsy. The seizures of idiopathic epilepsy are mostly systemic, such as generalized tonic-coil seizures, absence seizures, and myoclonic seizures. It is caused by a variety of organic brain diseases or metabolic disorders.

Symptomatic secondary causes can be divided into the following situations:

1. Congenital malformations, such as chromosomal malformations, congenital hydrocephalus, microcephaly, corpus callosum dysplasia, cerebral cortex dysplasia, etc.

2. Birth injury is a common cause of symptomatic epilepsy in infants. Contusion, edema, hemorrhage and infarction can also lead to local brain sclerosis, forming lesions after several years. Patients with cerebral paralysis often suffer from epilepsy.

3. Sequelae of febrile convulsions: Severe and prolonged febrile convulsions can lead to brain damage including neuron loss and glial hyperplasia.

4. Brain injury: Patients with residual epilepsy after brain injury may have depressed fractures, dura mater tears, local nervous system signs, and memory impairment after long-term injury. The most common cases are early epileptic seizures within a few weeks after injury.

5. Viral infection

6. Poisoning by lead, mercury, carbon monoxide, ethanol, strychnine, isoniazid, and systemic diseases such as pregnancy-induced hypertension and uremia can all cause epilepsy.

7. Senile dementia is often accompanied by epilepsy.
